This week's Retro Saturday is a 1983 NASA film titled, Mars: The Search Begins. It was part of a NASA Lewis Research Center series titled, NASA At Work: Journey Through the Solar System. The film was the seventh episode in the series.

(Lewis was renamed the John H. Glenn Research Center in 1999.)

The film is about Mariner 9, which was the first human spacecraft to orbit another planet.

Among the astronomers appearing in the film is Carl Sagan. It appears that the original footage may have been filmed in the mid-1970s, then used in this 1983 documentary series.

Mariner 9 launched from Pad 36B at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on May 30, 1971.
